Christopher Nolan’s Tenet may still be released in Europe this summer

July 24, 2020 by EJ Moreno

It looks like the summer of Nolan isn’t officially over just yet.

A report from Variety states that Warner Bros is still looking to launch Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster, outside of North America this summer and the studio is said to be reaching out to “international exhibitors about a possible late August launch.”

The release date for cinemas in the U.K., France, and Spain are said to be August 26th to 28th. Though it’s not confirmed yet, a source close to Variety notes that the “talks are positive.” The release in the Asian markets is said to be even earlier than the end of August.

An exhibitor in Europe, who was contacted by Warner Bros, reportedly told Variety that the “tipping point in favor of an international release ahead of a U.S. bow” boiled down to China reopening its cinemas this past week. Korean zombie thriller Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula brought in $20.8 million across four markets, which surprised many and led the studio down this path.

Just this past Monday, Warner Bros. officially removed Nolan’s Tenet from its release calendar. Still, the studio gave viewers and cinemas a promise to update with a new release date “imminently.” Reports say they still hope to release the film in 2020, but there’s still no official word on anything yet. The third delay for the film reportedly became a significant issue for the international cinema exhibitors as they planned to base their “recovery business models” around the United States release of major blockbusters.

We have reached out to Warner Bros. UK for comment on the UK release plans, but are yet to receive a response at the time of posting.

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
