Comic Book Review – Chew #50

July 2, 2015 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Chew #50…

The landmark issue #50, and the showdown everyone’s been waiting for.

Ten issues left to go, and Blood Puddin’ comes to an end. There isn’t any clever jokes (yes there was), funny names drawn into the backgrounds (saw a few), or light-hearted punch lines to anything this week: it was just a fight. The Collector v. Tony, mano – e- mano, for all the marbles. The Collector built his army around him, including the Mashed Potato Golems, but we see, early on, in one of those great “after the chaos” panels Chew does so well, well, I won’t spoil anything you’ll just have to read it. There were actually quite a few of those massive panel shots in this issue, more so than normal Chew which likes to splash as much onto a page as possible.

There’s actually not much to say here; even in its simplicity, Chew manages to find a very cool balance between fan service, happy conclusion to a major plotline, with bittersweet ending and a humourous (although completely un-true) epilogue. Being there are ten issues left, we’re a bit in the dark about where the story goes from here, as this feels as much a finale without all the extra’s that will be inevitably added to the final issue, as any right here.

And remember kids, all top-secret files are usually written by drunk science people.

Rating: 8/10
