Comic Book Review – Once & Future #7

April 1, 2020 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Once & Future #7…

The continuation of the story of Duncan, Rose, Gran and the rest of the players is a welcome addition to my reading pile in this harrowing real life time. We pick back up a short time after the events of issue #6, Galahad is trapped in Camelot with King Arthur and Duncan and Rose are coming to terms with their new roles in our world.

The story starts with the twisted and warped Camelot, where King Arthur can sense an old rival of his being brought forth to challenge his rule. This is where the eager Galahad character sees the chance to prove his worth. The man must go through a transformation and sit on a throne to transcend and become one of King Arthur’s court.

Duncan on the other hand is chasing down leads and becoming a far more proficient monster hunter than when we last left him. The passage of time has been spent honing his abilities and seeing a great deal of growth from him and Rose. The events of issue #6 have left Duncan and his Gran somewhat estranged, but not totally out of contact.

When all evidence points to some mysterious goings on in London, Duncan must journey to anticipate and deal with the challenge that is coming forth. The biggest issue here is that a mysterious third party has just played the two sides off against each other to bring forth the enemy of Arthur into the material realm, and our next great challenge is in front of us.

Once & Future is probably my favourite series out right now, as a fan of Arthurian legend and this extremely imaginative re-telling of the history. The story is gripping and fun while the art style is gorgeous; each panel is filled with rich colours and details that could so easily be looked over if you were skimming the comic.

I am totally invested in this world and will annoyingly wait patiently for the next issue, because there is not much else we can do right now. Take care everyone and be safe.

Rating: 9/10
