Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker returns as three new Star Wars movies announced by Lucasfilm

April 7, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Get ready for the return of the Jedi (again) as Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker is heading back to the big screen in the first of three new Star Wars movies announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at Star Wars Celebration Europe today.

Ridley’s Rey will return in an as-yet-untiled movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) and writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), which will take place 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in a time- period Lucasfilm has dubbed ‘New Jedi Order’.

In addition to the Rey movie, James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) will direct a film set 25,000 years before the events of the current films, detailing an era called ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ which will explore the earliest Jedi to use the force.

That will also be joined by a feature film from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Bad Batch’s Dave Filoni, which is described as a “cinematic event” that will bring together the events of the Disney+ shows The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Star Wars: Ahsoka (which just received its first trailer) to detail the “escalating war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republic.”

So, that means we’re likely seeing our OT heroes back on the big screen, albeit digitally de-aged/recreated, right?

As for how these films will fit into the ever expanding Star Wars canon, Lucasfilm also officially announced that the events of the galaxy far, far away now span nine ‘Eras’: Dawn of the Jedi, The Old Republic, The High Republic, Fall of the Jedi, Rise of the Empire Age of Rebellion, The New Republic, Rise of the First Order, New Jedi Order.

What do you make of these Star Wars announcements? Which movie excites you the most? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth and stay tuned to the site this weekend for all your Star Wars Celebration news…
