Danny Boyle to direct trilogy-launching sequel to 28 Days Later

January 11, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Over twenty years after he set his infected loose upon the streets of London, Danny Boyle is returning to the world of 28 Days Later to direct a potential trilogy launching sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Boyle will reunite with Alex Garland, who wrote the groundbreaking original, for 28 Years Later, with the hope of launching a new trilogy of films.

Boyle is confirmed as director of the first installment, while Garland would write all three. The budget for each movie is reported to be in the $75 million range.

2002’s 28 Days Later was made for $8 million, and went on to gross $85.7 million at the worldwide box-office. It also launched the career of Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, who as recently as last year revealed that he’d be keen on a return to Boyle’s apocalyptic landscape.

A really-rather-good sequel was released in 2007 in the form of the Robert Carlyle-headlined 28 Weeks Later, which Boyle and Garland executive produced, but it didn’t make the same kind of impact as the original ($65M WW).

Per THR, years of rumours and speculation should come to an end later this week when Boyle and Garland shop the project to potential buyers.
