With lead actor Ryan Hurst forced to vacate the role after suffering an on-set injury during production, it seems that Amazon and Sony may have found his replacement as Kratos in the upcoming God of War series, with Variety reporting that Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is in talks to join the video game adaptation.
The series adaptation of the hit PlayStation video game franchise has been in the works at Amazon since 2022, with Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) announced as portraying Kratos alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus back in February of this year – news which was accompanied by a first-look at the two actors in character. However, Hurst tore his bicep during filming in June, with Sony and Amazon opting to recast the role rather than delaying production into 2027.
Aside from possessing the physicality needed to step into the role at such short notice, Bautista has an established relationship with Amazon MGM, having led the Prime Video movies My Spy, My Spy: The Eternal City and The Wrecking Crew, as well as appearing in the studio’s upcoming Road House sequel and Highlander remake.
Written and showrun by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind), God of War has received a two-season order from Prime Video, and the official logline reads: “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
