After Ryan Hurst had to step down from playing Kratos following an on-set injury, Amazon MGM and Sony Television have officially cast Guardians of the Galaxy alum Dave Bautista to portray the iconic God of War.

Hurst was cast as Kratos alongside Callum Vinson as his son Atreus, but Hurst had a serious injury where he tore his bicep during a stunt in June, forcing a production halt and Amazon deciding to recast the role due to the seriousness of Hurst’s injury. Reports earlier this month claimed they had begun talks with Bautista to take over the role with a plan to completely reshoot all of the footage so as to fully include Bautista even when the series was already four months into production at the time of Hurst’s injury.
God of War had been given a two-season order with the plan to film them back-to-back in Vancouver. Production will restart mid-October with director Frederick E.O. Toye returning to reshoot the first two episodes.
The God of War series adapts the rebooted games from Santa Monica Studio which takes place long after the original trilogy. The story sees Kratos, who once destroyed the Olympic pantheon of gods in a bloody quest of vengeance, living a secluded life in the Norse lands and is left to raise his 10-year-old son Atreus alone after the death of his wife. On their journey to honour her last wish and spread her ashes, they encounter many of the gods from Norse mythology as Odin tries to control a powerful prophecy.

God of War will feature Bautista and Vinson alongside Mandy Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Sonya Walger as Freya, Island Austin as Thrud, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Evelyn Miller as Gna.
Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
