David Tennant’s Doctor is back in trailer for Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials

October 25, 2023 by Ricky Church

With Doctor Who celebrating its 60th anniversary, the BBC and Disney have released a trailer for the upcoming anniversary specials featuring the return of franchise favourites David Tennant and Catherine Tate as they face off against the Doctor’s enemy The Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Tennant previously held the role of the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and reprised it in the 50th anniversary special starring alongside Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. In the 60th anniversary specials, instead of returning as the Tenth Doctor Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor in the Doctor’s regeneration cycle after Jodie Whitaker’s time as the character concluded earlier this year. The specials will lead into the Doctor’s fifteenth regeneration where he will be played by Ncuti Gatwa in the next Doctor Who series. Tate will reprise her role as Donna Noble, the Doctor’s companion.

Not much is known about the specials, but they will see the Doctor try to undo the memory wipe he performed on Donna at the end of their series. The three specials, titled The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle, are directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button respectively.

Destiny isn’t done with them just yet…The Doctor and Donna return for three special episodes.

The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials will air on BBC and Disney+ November 25th, December 2nd and December 9th.
