DC adapting Watchmen and Crisis On Infinite Earths as animated movies

July 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

2024 will be quite the year for DC Studios’ animation. We’ll see two of the most iconic works brought to life in animated movies, with DC announcing new Watchmen and Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths films.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, DC showcased two logos for the movies and offered some teases. Though, the studio is tight-lipped as most details are still under wraps.

For Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths, the animated film will likely follow their latest release Warworld, serving as the next installment in DC’s Tomorrowverse animated films. Since its comic book debut in 1985, the Crisis On Infinite Earths story has been adapted once before for the Arrowverse television on The CW.

With that being a jumping-off point, expect DC to venture into their different animated offerings, including Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, Young Justice, and Batman: The Animated Series.

Watchmen, the Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons’ acclaimed graphic novel, is looking at another adaptation. We’ve seen Zack Snyder’s film adaptation, the award-winning HBO series, and an animated short film adapting the “Tales of the Black Freighter” segments from the comic.

Watchmen is one of the most acclaimed comic book works, recognized in Time’s List of the 100 Best Novels. In 2012, DC published Before Watchmen, a series of nine prequel miniseries, and Doomsday Clock, a 12-issue limited series and sequel to the original Watchmen series, from 2017 to 2019, without Moore’s or Gibbons’ involvement.

At the time of reporting, no official release date or cast had been announced for either of the projects. The films are set for a home video release as well. Keep posted to Flickering Myth for more news…
