Disney no longer set to release The Bikeriders

November 21, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Despite a stellar cast featuring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy, as well as positive buzz from the festival circuit (read our own review here), Disney are reportedly set to park Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders on the lot.

20th Century Studios’ The Bikeriders was removed from the Disney release schedule last month, and now according to theinsneider, it has come upon another fork in the road with the news that financers New Regency are seeking a new distributor, with the possibility of a streaming-service release among the options.

Originally set for a wide release on December 1st, the SAG-AFTRA strike put the brakes on that, with the star-studded cast not being available to promote the film. Even though that has now reached its conclusion, busy schedules and packed release windows meant that The Bikeriders would remain in lock-up for the foreseeable future, and so New Regency is shopping it around town.

The urgency has been put down to the fact the financers are coming off the back of an expensive failure in the form of The Creator, which cost $80 million plus marketing to produce, and only recouped $103 million at the worldwide box-office.

Inspired by the photobook of the same name by Danny Lyon, The Bikeriders has an impressive cast making up its Midwestern motorcycle chapter, including Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Austin Butler (Elvis), Tom Hardy (Venom), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Michael Shannon (Take Shelter), Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the Pines), Boyd Holbrook (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire), and Damon Herriman (Justified).
