Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off Caine begins production with teaser announcement

April 29, 2026 by Ricky Church

While fans wait for the official fifth chapter of the John Wick franchise, Lionsgate has begun production on the next spin-off Caine which will see Donnie Yen reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine. The studio revealed the news in a short teaser for the film as cameras roll.

Yen’s Caine was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 as one of John’s old friends who is reluctantly forced to hunt him under the threat of the High Table killing his daughter. Though John and Caine do fight each other, they still retain a friendly camaraderie and team up to beat the High Table at their own game. The last we saw of Caine was in the post-credits scene for the film as he was about to reunite with his daughter, but danger was near as Akira, the daughter of Shimazu who Caine killed earlier in the film, was sneaking up on him to avenge her father.

Caine marks Yen’s English-language directorial debut as he directs and executive produces from a script by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) and Robert Askins. Rina Sawayama will return as Akira, but no additional cast has been announced as of yet.

The John Wick franchise has been expanding in the last few years beginning with the prequel series The Continental and last year’s spin-off Ballerina which starred Ana de Armas in a story that took place between the third and fourth chapters. An anime prequel has also been announced which will explore John Wick’s “impossible task” that cemented his legacy as the Baba Yaga alongside a AAA video game for current gen consoles. As for John Wick: Chapter 5, Keanu Reeves and series director Chad Stahelski are currently developing the story.

A release date is yet to be announced for Caine, but expect it in 2027.
