Dune: Part Two officially announced for 2023 release

October 26, 2021 by Ricky Church

After the very successful weekend it has had at the box office, it seemed only a matter of time before Warner Bros. officially greenlit a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune. Now, Legendary has announced that Dune: Part Two will begin development for a release date of October 20, 2023.

Villeneuve has said before that his vision of Dune would be a two-part film, though Warner Bros. had only greenlit one film at the time. Dune was originally written by Frank Herbert in 1965 and has been cited as one of the best and most groundbreaking science fiction novels ever made. A film adaptation was made in the 1980s by David Lynch, though to much less critical and fan love than the latest adaptation as it crammed Herbert’s extensive story into one movie among other issues.

Dune was released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max, a fact which stirred many emotions from both Villeneuve and fans as they felt a streaming release would diminish the scale of the film’s vision. The film’s $220 million worldwide haul at the box office has been Warner Bros. best opening in theatres during the pandemic and a sign audiences want to see it on the biggest screen possible.

This is only the beginning…

Thank you to those who have experienced @dunemovie so far, and those who are going in the days and weeks ahead. We're excited to continue the journey! pic.twitter.com/mZj68Hnm0A

As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).
