Dunkirk has already beaten Interstellar’s total UK box office

August 1, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Dunkirk has already out earned Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s previous blockbuster release, at the UK box office.

Bringing in a total of $35.4 million in Nolan’s home territory, Dunkirk has flown past Interstellar’s grand total of $31.3 million in just ten days.

Dunkirk was always going to do relatively well in the UK, the tale of the evacuation of mostly British soldiers during WWII was bound to strike a nerve, and add that to Nolan’s enormous popularity as a filmmaker, and great reviews, we shouldn’t be too surprised to see it doing well.

Dunkirk should be on track for a pretty hefty figure in the territory, with most movies opening to similar numbers going on to make between $40 million and $60 million.

The film is performing better than expected over in the US as well, having already brought in $101 million. Dunkirk’s international total sits at £232.8 million, still some way off Interstellar’s $675 million.

Dunkirk will need to perform very well in China when it debuts in September if it wants to match Nolan’s sci-fi epic. Interstellar brought in a huge $121 million from the market back in 2014.

However, this seems unlikely given Dunkirk’s WWII plot. That being said, Hacksaw Ridge managed to bring in $60 million from China. Perhaps this will be a more modest target for Nolan’s film.

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”

Dunkirk sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and newcomer Fionn Whitehead.
