Eric Idle penning movie adaptation of hit Monty Python musical Spamalot

May 4, 2018 by Tom Beasley

In this world of remakes, reboots, reimaginings, sequels and sidequels, people have seen just about everything at this point. However, they almost certainly haven’t seen a movie based on a stage show based on a movie.

Step forward Eric Idle, who is writing the script for a film adaptation of Spamalot – his hit Broadway and West End musical described as being “lovingly ripped off” from 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Idle is adapting the show and taking up a producer role, with theatre helmer Casey Nicholaw set to make his movie debut in the director’s chair.

Nicholaw is considered to be a top Broadway director, winning a Tony Award for The Book of Mormon and recently opening the Mean Girls musical to a pair of Tony noms. He also choreographed the Spamalot musical when it opened on Broadway back in 2005.

Deadline reported the news and added that insiders have said Spamalot will be “more than just an adaption” of the stage musical.

The project is apparently on the fast track over at Fox, with casting set to take place soon ahead of a Spring 2019 shoot.
