Ethan Hawke backtracks on his criticism of Logan and superhero movies

October 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Ethan Hawke ruffled a few feathers back in August with his remarks about last year’s acclaimed X-Men spinoff Logan, with the actor suggesting that the Hugh Jackman-headlined blockbuster wasn’t a “great movie”, but rather “a fine superhero movie” and seemingly insinuating that comic book films are inferior to others.

Well, speaking to Collider, Hawke has now clarified his comments, stating that he’s actually a big fan of comics and comic book movies and is glad to see that geek culture is enjoying huge mainstream success after years of being maligned by the masses.

“One of the things that’s cool about that is that’s because for a long time – I thought about this for a little bit – for a long time, comicbooks and people who cared about comicbooks were ghetto-ized. And it was made to feel small. And now they run the table. And there’s been this giant switch in my lifetime, I mean, like I am a comicbook geek, I’ve seen all those [movies]. The idea that I’m the one criticizing them is a joke, because I – there’s very few things I enjoy more – this is something I teach my son – that something about being a geek is being real. That’s what it means: I’m gonna be real.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan reunites Hugh Jackman with The Wolverine director James Mangold and also stars Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal.
