Female-fronted Greatest American Hero reboot lands at ABC

January 26, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

Believe it or not, ABC has picked up the pilot for a show which ran on their network between 1981-83, and is fondly remembered by those of a certain age.

The Greatest American Hero was an hourlong comedy drama that starred William Katt as a teacher who inherited a red suit from a group of visiting extraterrestrials, but having lost the instruction manual had to learn how to be a superhero on-the-job, with [looking back through the haze of nostalgia] hilarious consequences.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the reboot will be a single-camera, half-hour comedy, that focuses on a character called Meera, a 30-year old Indian-American woman whose only powers appear to be drinking and karaoke.

The pilot was written by Fresh off the Boat‘s Rachna Fruchbom, who will executive produce alongside FOTB creator Nahnatchka Khan, her producing partner, Mandy Summers, and the daughter of the original series creator Stephen J. Cannell, TV director Tawnia McKiernan (Blue Bloods).

Whatever your thoughts on reboots or nostalgia mining, there’s no denying that there’s some appeal in getting a reworked version of that catchy theme. Take a listen and tell us that you aren’t walking on air.

We’ll keep you updated on casting and a premiere date as soon as we hear it.
