First Joker set photos featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Brett Cullen cast as Thomas Wayne

September 17, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday, director Todd Phillips shared an image of a pre-Clown Prince of Crime Joaquin Phoenix from Warner Bros. and DC Films’ standalone Joker movie, and now with cameras rolling we’ve got a look at some set photos, which see Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck looking rather amused as he meets a clown. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has released an official press release announcing the start of production on the film, which reveals that Brett Cullen (The Dark Knight Rises) has signed on to the film, with The Wrap claiming that he’ll be taking over the role of Thomas Wayne following Alec Baldwin’s exit.

The press release also includes the following synopsis:

“Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Todd Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

Joker is set for release on October 4th 2019 and stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), and Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island).
