Forbidden Planet remake in development at Warner Bros.

November 17, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that a new take on the classic 1956 sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet is in development at Warner Bros., with Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) set to write the screenplay and former Fox and Paramount exec Emma Watts (Avatar) producing.

Forbidden Planet follows the crew of a United Planets starship as it is sent to a remote planet to investigate the disappearance of a previous ship some twenty years earlier. Directed by Nicholas Nayfack, the cast included Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and a pre-c0medic Leslie Nielsen, as well as the iconic Robby the Robot. It is considered a landmark in science-fiction cinema, and has been widely referenced across popular culture.

Hollywood has long-eyed a remake of Forbidden Planet, with the likes of James Cameron, David Twohy, Joel Silver, and J. Michael Straczynski all attached at various points as the rights circled between New Line Cinema and DreamWorks. It remains to be seen if this latest attempt will make it any further than past efforts, but be sure to let us know if you’re excited by the prospect over on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
