Gareth Edwards to direct Star Wars spin-off and two more Godzilla movies

May 23, 2014 by admin

With Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla running amok through the box office competition, it was announced on StarWars.com that its director Gareth Edwards will be heading to a galaxy far, far away for a Star Wars spin-off. And not only that, but according to The Hollywood Reporter he’s also attached for two more entries in this newly formed Godzilla franchise.

It’s unclear which Star Wars spin-off Edwards will be directing but it has a release date of December 16th 2016 with a script being penned by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli).

Edwards was quoted on StarWars.com as saying: “Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm”.

And it seems that Edwards will be returning to The King of the Monsters in Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3. Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull said, when asked about Edwards working on Star Wars, “Gareth’s filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars instalment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

What do you think about Gareth Edwards heading to Star Wars as well as directing more instalments of Godzilla? Quite the leap from Monsters wouldn’t you say?

Godzilla is currently in cinemas. You can read our reviews here and here, our podcast review here and check out Luke Owen’s 5 things he wants to see in the sequel here.
