Geostorm is a washout at the U.S. box office, fails to recoup reshoot costs

October 22, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

Coming off the back of disastrous reviews [read ours here] director Dean Devlin’s Geostorm has bombed at the domestic box office, with the $120 million budgeted blockbuster grossing just $13.3 million in its opening weekend in North America – less than the $15 million spent on its extensive reshoots.

Geostorm has performed somewhat better internationally, having grossed $49.6 million from 50 international markets since it began its rollout last weekend. It is set to open in China this coming week, where it is going up against another box office struggler in Blade Runner 2049.

Taking top spot in the U.S. this weekend is Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween with $21.65 million, while other new releases included Only the Brave with $6 million in fifth and The Snowman with $3.4 million in eighth.

Check out our exclusive Geostorm interviews with Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess here…

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

Geostorm sees Dean Devlin directing a cast that includes Gerard Butler, Katheryn Winnick, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Andy Garcia, and Ed Harris.
