Ghostbusters: Afterlife release date pushed back by one week

September 2, 2021 by Liam Waddington

The highly-anticipated Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which is the direct follow-up film to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, has been delayed by one week from 11th November to 19th November – the date which was originally held by Top Gun: Maverick.

This isn’t the first time that Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been delayed since the film was originally scheduled to be released as a summer blockbuster in 2020 until the pandemic forced theatres worldwide to shut their doors. The film was then rescheduled for June 2021 before additional concerns about the pandemic and uncertainty around other audiences would be willing to return to theatres caused Sony to push the film back to November.

Although audiences are going to have to wait slightly longer to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife, attendees at an early screening during CinemaCon have given their first reactions to the film with critics calling it the “perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh & unique twist” and the “sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see.”

From writer and director Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the next chapter in the Ghostbusters universe and follows a single mother and her two children who arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman and stars Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame), Bokeem Woodbine (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Celeste O’Connor (Wetlands), Oliver Cooper (Mindhunter) and newcomer Logan Kim, along with returning Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz).
