Godzilla vs. Kong could be heading to HBO Max after failed Netflix bid

November 27, 2020 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse mash-up Godzilla vs. Kong could be set to follow DC Films’ Wonder Woman 1984 to HBO Max, with Deadline reporting that talks are underway to take the blockbuster direct to the streaming service.

According to Deadline’s sources, Netflix had approached Warner and Legendary – who own 25% and 75% respectively – with an offer in excess of $200 million to acquire the film, which brings together the two cinema titans after 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

However, WarnerMedia is said to have vetoed the offer and is now in negotiations of its own with Legendary about bringing the film to HBO Max, potentially with a simultaneous theatrical release as it is doing with Wonder Woman 1984.

However, Warner Bros. isn’t ready to make anything official just yet however, with a spokesperson for the studio telling the trade that: We plan to release Godzilla vs. Kong theatrically next year as scheduled [on May 21st 2021].”

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Blair Witch) and sees Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox) reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while new additions to the MonsterVerse include Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Rebecca Hall (Holmes and Watson), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Shun Oguri (Crows Zero), and Lance Reddick (The Wire).
