Guy Ritchie to direct Disney’s live-action Hercules

June 17, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2020 it was announced that Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo were reuniting with Disney to produce a live-action adaptation of the 1997 animated film Hercules, and now comes word from Deadline that the project has found its director in Guy Ritchie.

This won’t be Ritchie’s first stab at a Disney adaptation as the British filmmaker also helmed the studio’s live-action Aladdin starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith, which went on to gross over a billion dollars back in 2019.

The Russos are producing Hercules through their AGBO production banner, and the duo will now look to bring in new writers alongside Ritchie to work on a first draft from Dave Callaham (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

Ritchie currently has the spy action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre awaiting release from STX Films, and he is also in production on an as-yet-untitled action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
