Henry Cavill steps away from The Witcher, Liam Hemsworth stepping in

October 30, 2022 by EJ Moreno

As Henry Cavill enters a new era as Superman, he leaves behind one of his fan-favorite roles.

In a shocking news story, Cavill will step away from The Witcher for Season 4, leaving behind the Geralt of Rivia role he’s played for three seasons. That doesn’t mean the end of the series however as Netflix has announced that Liam Hemsworth will play Geralt in The Witcher‘s fourth season.

Henry Cavill opened up about the departure and offered kind words for the new Geralt.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him; enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

While the third season has yet to air, this does confirm a fourth season, even if there is a new lead. Speaking of Hemsworth, the actor expressed his joy in a statement released by Netflix.

“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” he said in a statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

The previous two seasons of The Witcher were released in the winter, but the third season will be a summer event in 2023. The official synopsis reads:

As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.

The Witcher features a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey, MyAnna Buring, Tom Canton, Jeremy Crawford, Eamon Farren, Mahesh Jadu, Terence Maynard, Lars Mikkelsen, Mimî M Khayisa, Royce Pierreson, Wilson Mbomio, Anna Shaffer, Therica Wilson-Read, Cassie Clare, Mecia Simson, Graham McTavish, Bart Edwards, Simon Callow, Liz Carr, Ed Birch, Kaine Zajaz, Meng’er Zhang, Robbie Amell, Hugh Skinner and Christelle Elwin.

The first two seasons of The Witcher are available to stream now on Netflix.
