High praise and mass walkouts during first Suspiria screening

September 1, 2018 by EJ Moreno

Not everyone is ready or willing to dive into the world of Suspiria. Reports say that there were many walk-outs from the Venice Film Festival attendees about half-way through the film. Some went as far as to boo the movie when credits rolled. To be fair, it’s also reported that many are praising Suspiria with it getting whistles and cheers at the end. It seems like we have 2018’s most polarizing film upon us!

One tweet from podcast The Habitus calls the horror film “colourless, gory, kind of a dull trudge,” while a tweet from another viewer called Suspiria “the most intense experience of their life.” Even with how different the tweets seem, they both showcase the tone and style director Luca Guadagnino wanted to achieve. The reaction is similar to what many felt about the original Suspiria, the 1977’s giallo film by Dario Argento, so fans of that film can rest easy. Lorenzo Ciorcalo on Twitter went as far as to say this film is a “radical reframing” and not a remake.

The full reviews will appear online on Saturday evening and expect it to get even more divisive then.

A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the troupe’s artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Suspiria is set for release on November 2nd in the States and on November 16th in the UK and features a cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Jessica Harper, Chloe Grace Moretz, Renee Soutendijk, and Angela Winkler.
