Highlander reboot moving forward with Henry Cavill and Chad Stahelski

October 27, 2023 by Ricky Church

A reboot of the cult classic fantasy Highlander has been in the works for quite some time, but it seems it is finally moving forward as Deadline reports producing studio Lionsgate is preparing to launch sales at AFM, the American Film Market festival. John Wick director Chad Stahelski is helming the reboot with former Witcher star Henry Cavill as the lead.

Lionsgate will present the film to new buyers at AFM with an estimated budget of over $100 million. Deadline notes that due to the impact of the writers and actors strikes, with SAG-AFTRA still ongoing after having recently met with the AMPTP to negotiate, there are very few films to present at AFM.

Stahelski and Cavill’s Highlander is hoping to start production in early 2024. Mike Finch, one of the writers for John Wick: Chapter 4, has written the script and it will be produced by Stahelski, Joshua Davis,  Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski and Louise Rosner. Little is known about the plot, but Stahelski previously teased “our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”

The original Highlander starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as a trio of immortal beings who hunted each other across the centuries. The British film and television franchise was created by American screenwriter Gregory Widen. There have been four theatrical Highlander films, two live-action television series, an animated series, and an anime film.
