Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard takes #1 at the US box office as Godzilla vs. Kong passes $100M

June 21, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews, including our own ★★ appraisal, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard has banked on the charm of its trio of stars and taken the top spot from A Quiet Place Part II at the U.S. box-office this weekend.

With a three-day gross of $11.6M, the Patrick Hughes directed action-comedy sequel took its domestic total to $17M, which isn’t too bad until you consider that it cost $70M to make, and has Universal’s F9 looming in its rear-view mirror for its long-awaited release this weekend. That’s an even more terrifying prospect because the latest instalment of Vin Diesel’s vehicular franchise has already made $292M overseas.

Knocked from the summit was 2021’s undisputed box-office success story, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Part II, which dropped a solid 22% from last week with $9.4M, taking it’s domestic tally to $125M, and it’s worldwide cume to $221.9M.

The Top 10’s other noteworthy stories were the belly-up sophomore frame for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical, In the Heights, which dropped 62% from it’s meagre opening mark for a weekend take of $4.3M and #6 on the chart, and the much better news for Warner Bros. and HBO Max’s dual release strategy, Godzilla vs. Kong finally crossing the $100M mark after three-months of release. The Monsterverse blockbuster currently stands at $442M worldwide.

The full chart can be seen over at BoxOfficeMojo.
