Hulu swings the axe on Marvel Television’s last live-action series Helstrom

December 15, 2020 by Gary Collinson

The last live-action series to be produced by Marvel Television is no more.

Yes, as Marvel Studios prepares to dip its toes jump head first into the world of TV with a wealth of Disney+ series, the final show from the now-disbanded Marvel Television has come to an end with news that Hulu has cancelled Helstrom after a single season.

Helstrom starred Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon as Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, who use their skills to track down the worst of humanity.

Under the stewardship of Jeph Loeb, Marvel Television launched its first project Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2013, with subsequent live-action series including Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Inhumans, The Punisher, Runaways and Cloak & Dagger, as well as the X-Men-themed The Gifted and Legion.

However, despite Loeb’s repeatedly insistence that “It’s All Connected”, it became increasingly clear as time went on that Kevin Feige and company were paying little attention to the small screen when it came to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Disney decided to shut down Marvel Television last year, handing control to Feige and Marvel Studios.

The MCU will soon become fully integrated across screens big and small however with Marvel bringing the likes of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight to Disney+ (not to mention a whole host of additional projects announced during last week’s Disney Investor Day).

Before it disappears entirely, Marvel Television does still have the animated series M.O.D.O.K. heading to Hulu in 2021, while a Hit-Monkey animated series also officially remains in development.
