Interview – Future Man star Eliza Coupe on season 2’s strangest, most difficult scene to shoot

October 16, 2018 by Justin Cook

Future Man interviews took place at roundtables at New York Comic-Con, and the following article contains MILD SPOILERS about Future Man season 2…

Fans of Hulu’s science fiction comedy Future Man will be pleased to hear that season 2 doesn’t let up on the pure, unfiltered moments of comedic absurdity that made the first season so memorable — in fact, it sure sounds like the show will be doubling down on its bawdiness and insanity when it returns to the streaming platform on January 11th, 2019.

The stars of the show, Josh Hutcherson, Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson, have certainly been the victims of the writers’ many ridiculous ideas, which in the first season included a naked fight between two versions of Hutcherson’s Josh Futterman (both with hilariously varied genital sizes), mass projectile vomiting at a holiday party and much more. However, there may be a new champion for the title of zaniest scene; when asked by a journalist during a roundtable interview at New York Comic Con about what the most difficult scene to make it through without breaking was this season, Coupe, who stars as soldier of the future, Tiger, confidently gave an answer.

“I had to… have full, to completion, sex with a brain… and my hands, in a room by myself with just the camera operator and everyone else in video village watching… to completion, by myself with my hand in something,” she said. “So my parents are going to see that.”

Coupe jokingly continued, “It’s great when you’re doing that and you’re like ‘Oh mom, dad they’re coming in,’ therapy… [I’m] paying a lot right now.'”

Flickering Myth followed up her answer by asking the actress what it’s like being a part of a show that continually puts her in (wacky) situations like that one, to which she replied, “It’s amazing, it’s amazing. What’s great is nothing phases me, I mean, from all the show that I’ve done, from even Scrubs, I can’t be phased. I also grew up with two brothers in New Hampshire, so it’s like nothing’s really gonna… get me. Although, I mean things have, but it’s more of an ‘Oh, oh OK, that’s what’s happening.'”

Executive producers Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter also revealed the scene to be one of their favorites of season 2.

On the amount of creative freedom Hulu gives the show, executive producer Ben Karlin commented, “I can say without equivocation, it is the most creatively hospitable environment I’ve ever worked in, in terms of letting us do what we want to do and letting us succeed or fail on the merits of our ideas.”

Coupe will be playing multiple versions of herself on the show this season, so which version of herself, as well as which character’s brain this scene involves is a mystery that will only be solved by tuning in to the show upon its return early next year.

Stay tuned for more Future Man New York Comic-Con coverage coming to Flickering Myth soon!
