J.J. Abrams on bringing back the Knights of Ren for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

December 1, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After briefly introducing the characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, director J.J. Abrams is set to bring back the Knights of Ren for this month’s closing chapter of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

While many expected this mysterious group of villains to play a larger role in the Sequel Trilogy, Rian Johnson opted against including them in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and now Abrams has spoken about their upcoming return during an interview with Esquire.

“They’re characters that, when we came up with them in Force Awakensand had very brief sighting of them, it was something that we had a lot of ideas of sort of further adventures with them, backstory, you know, and all sorts of things that were not the focus of the central story, and never made it into the movie,” said Abrams. And Episode VIII, The Last Jedi, didn’t address that, at all, and it just allowed for us to bring them back in.”

Just how large of a role the Knights of Ren will play in The Rise of Skywalker remains to be seen, but it sounds like we shouldn’t expect too many – if any – answers about their past, with Abrams then going on to state:

“I mean, they’re best kept more mysterious than familiar, which is just to say there aren’t going to be a lot of scenes with them taking their masks off and hanging out and eating sandwiches, but it felt like I definitely wanted to see more of them than we had, and I felt happy that we got a chance to do that in this movie.”
