J.J. Abrams says Overlord is not a Cloverfield movie, but a direct Cloverfield sequel is in the works

April 29, 2018 by Gary Collinson

For the past year or so, it has been assumed – and heavily rumured – that the J.J. Abrams-produced World War II supernatural adventure Overlord would be the fourth instalment in the Cloverfield series.

Well, it turns out that isn’t the case after all, as Abrams has revealed at CinemaCon that Overlord is “not a Cloverfield movie” but that there is a Cloverfield 4 in the works and “we’re actually developing a true, dedicated Cloverfield sequel”.

Naturally that comment suggests that Cloverfield 4 could be a direct sequel to the original Cloverfield movie (so Cloverfield 2?), rather than an unrelated sci-fi-based project as with 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox.

It’s a little unclear whether it was never the plan for Overlord to fall under the Cloverfield banner, or if Paramount and Bad Robot have had a change of heart, given that they pulled the last entry The Cloverfield Paradox from theatrical release and sold it off to Netflix.

Here’s the official synopsis for Overlord:

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

Overlord is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and features a cast that includes Jovan Adepo (Fences), Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones), Dominic Applewhite (The King’s Speech), Pilou Asbaek (Ghost in the Shell), Iain de Caestecker (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), John Magaro (The Big Short), Mathilde Ollivier (The Misfortunes of Francois Jane) and Bokeem Woodbine (Spider-Man: Homecoming).
