Jake Gyllenhaal discusses Mysterio role in Spider-Man: Far From Home

December 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Although the trailer is yet to make its way online after being debuted at Brazil’s Comic Con Experience earlier this month, reports coming out of CCXP revealed that Tom Holland’s web-slinger will find himself teaming with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck/Mysterio to battle three Elemental monsters in July’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

During an interview with Collider, Gyllenhaal has spoken about his role in the Marvel and Sony blockbuster, confirming that the main plot revolves around a team-up between Spidey and his comic book nemesis:

“It’s basically just about the kids going on a European vacation,” states Gyllenhaal. “We go to London, we go to Prague, we go everywhere. It’s just a really fun thing. There’s a lot of dynamics that go on. A lot of relationship stuff. A lot of cool funny stuff. A lot of fun stunt stuff. The main focus is for him not to be Spider-Man per se, but he gets dragged into it. But you know he reluctantly saves the world again with Mysterio. Mysterio’s a good guy in this, they’re both teaming up to kill the game, to defeat these Elemental monsters.”

“Well there are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way,” he continues. “And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”

That’s certainly a very different take on Mysterio, although one would have to assume there’ll be a very good reason as to why the character is so familiar with these Elementals…

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on July 5th 2019 and features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Michael Keaton (The Vulture), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio and J.B. Smoove (Uncle Drew), Remy Hii (Crazy Rich Asians) and Numan Acar (Homeland) in undisclosed roles.
