James Gunn teases that two mystery DC projects will enter production soon

February 2, 2024 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn has Superman: Legacy on his mind, but that doesn’t mean the new DCU isn’t moving forward.

During a recent post on social media to celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of the new DC Universe era, called Gods and Monsters: Chapter 1, the filmmaker and DC Studios co-chair let it be known that other projects are moving forward.

In the post, Gunn reveals: “One year ago today, Peter Safran & I introduced our DC slate for the 1st time – thanks to all of you for the support you’ve given us throughout the year. Today, Superman Legacy is about to start production, episodes of Creature Commandos are being finished that will release later this year, at least two more projects are gearing up to go in the next couple months, amazing scripts keep coming in, & incredible talent are being attached to new projects, planned & unplanned.”

On the movie side, DCU has announced Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. Superman: Legacy is already underway and will feature the super-villain group The Authority so that they can transition into their solo outing from here. Supergirl’s casting was just announced, with actress Milly Alcock landing the role so that they could secretly gather a director for that.

As for television, Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Peacemaker Season 2, and Matt Reeves’ Arkham Asylum show have been announced. Waller is a likely candidate for production, with Viola Davis currently not promoting or shooting anything, and her series is set to bridge the gap between new and old DC. Speaking of the old DCEU, Peacemaker could also start its second season, surviving the semi-reboot that Gunn and Safran did for the DC Universe.

Before we learn anything about these two additional projects, Gunn will focus on Superman: Legacy as the cast is set and will need to hurry along post-strike in order to make its 2025 release date with all the time for post-production and any additional photography.

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is slated for theaters on July 11th, 2025.
