Jared Leto talks gaining weight to play “Shakespearean” Joker, calls him a “beautiful disaster”

February 20, 2015 by admin

Next August, Jared Leto is set to join Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger in playing the iconic villain role of The Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. In an interview with Billboard, the 30 Seconds to Mars front-man and Oscar winner talked about gaining weight in preparation for the role.

“Do you mind if I eat a little?” Leto asked during the interview before diving into his vegan tacos. “I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours and I’m terrible at eating a lot.”

Hardly the fattiest of foods on the market, but what attracted Leto to the role in the first place?

“The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character – that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?” Leto says. “[He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character. What a big challenge.”

Set for release on August 5th 2016, Suicide Squad sees a cast that includes Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) as Rick Flagg, Will Smith (Hancock) as Deadshot, Jai Courtney (Terminator: Genisys) as Captain Boomerang, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker and Viola Davis (How to get Away with Murder) as Amanda Waller along with Jay Hernandez (Friday Night Lights) in an unconfirmed role, thought to be El Diablo. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Jesse Eisenberg is also expected to reprise the role of Lex Luthor.
