Jennifer Lopez teams with Bill Condon for Kiss of the Spider Woman

December 9, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Jennifer Lopez knows how to pick a memorable role, and her upcoming next gig could be one of her best yet as it has been reported that Lopez will team with Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Beauty and the Beast) for a musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman.

The film will serve as a direct adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical, which was a reworking of a 1985 feature film adaptation of Puig’s novel from director Héctor Babenco.

Per Variety, Lopez will play “the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including a role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina’s life is upended when a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz, is brought into his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.”

The outlet notes that production is searching for an unknown to play Molina.

For Jennifer Lopez, this seems to be another attempt at a successful awards season. Lopez found some awards love for her supporting role in Hustlers but did not make it to the Academy Awards of that year. With Kiss of the Spider Woman, Bill Condon, and an indie musical vibe, the actress will surely see this as the next way to get there. She’s currently awaiting the release of her ninth studio album, “This Is Me… Now.”

At the time of writing, the plan is to begin filming in April in New Jersey.
