Jodie Comer in contention to replace Charlize Theron as Furiosa in Mad Max spinoff

May 19, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Last week, Mad Max creator George Miller confirmed rumours that he plans to move ahead with his Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff centred on a young Furiosa, with Charlize Theron set to make way for a younger actress in a prequel taking place some twenty years prior to the 2015 film.

It has previously been rumoured that Miller was holding lockdown talks and auditions via Skype, with The Witch and The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy said to have been in negotiations, and now The Hollywood Reporter has thrown another name into the mix by reporting that Miller has also been eyeing Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer for the role.

Miller is currently in post-production on his newest film  Three Thousand Years of Longing, but the Furiosa spinoff seems to have been revving its engines for a couple of months now and the filmmaker has said that he’s looking to move forward once the public health crisis settles down and the landscape for productions becomes clearer.

The director stated this past week that he had intended to use digital de-aging on Charlize Theron for the film, but still doesn’t believe the technology is where it needs to be: “Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

Are you excited about a Furiosa spinoff without Charlize Theron reprising her Fury Road role? Do you think Jodie Comer or Anya Taylor-Joy would make for good replacements? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
