John Hyams to direct Nicolas Winding Refn-produced Maniac Cop remake

September 27, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Twitch is reporting that John Hyams has signed on to direct the upcoming remake of the 80s cult classic Maniac Cop, which is being produced by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) from a script by celebrated comic book writer Ed Brubaker.

Hyams’ previous directing credits include Universal Soldier: Regeneration and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, along with Dragon Eyes and Z Nation.

Released in 1988, Maniac Cop starred Bruce Campbell as a young cop wrongfully accused of a string of murders by a uniformed police officer, who sets out to prove his innocence by tracking down the real killer (played by Robert Z’Dar), who has returned from the dead. The film spawned two sequels: Maniac Cop 2 in 1990 and Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence in 1993.
