John Waters is back! Legendary filmmaker to helm Liarmouth, his first film in 18 years

October 6, 2022 by EJ Moreno

A glorious cinematic return upon us. For the first time in 18 years, John Waters is behind the director’s chair.

Deadline reports that John Waters, the man behind iconic films like Pink Flamingos and Hairspray, is returning to direct Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance. Waters will write the script and direct, which marks his first time directing since 2004’s A Dirty Shame.

“Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career,” Waters said. “Thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully, to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world.”

As per Deadline, the novel follows Marsha Sprinkle, “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”

Waters’ film career is quite legendary, with his first feature dating back to 1970. Since then, he’s helmed cult classics like Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and Serial Mom.

As of late, Waters has become quite a prolific author. He’s written Role Models, Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America, Make Trouble, Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder, and this year’s Liarmouth.

The Liarmouth film will come from Village Roadshow Entertainment.
