Jon Favreau says the idea to introduce Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian occurred naturally during the writing process

January 29, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Jon Favreau, the showrunner of The Mandalorian, says introducing Luke Skywalker wasn’t the plan from the beginning but a natural story progression.

When Luke Skywalker turned up to save the day in the season two finale of The Mandalorian, fans were stunned and delighted. But when did the idea to introduce the iconic hero first occur? Was it always the plan to have Luke take Grogu under his wing?

According to showrunner and writer Jon Favreau, he didn’t plan for Luke from the start but that the idea came about as the story and writing process progressed – it became an organic development that made sense for the story.

Speaking to the Writers Guild of America website, he said: “The story unfolded as I wrote it. The Mandalorian inherits a great deal from existing Star Wars stories, and when I write, that context is always a consideration. It became clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to transpire.”

It certainly made sense for Luke to come for Grogu during this point in the Star Wars timeline. He is at a point where he is exploring the galaxy, researching Jedi and Sith history, and starting to build a new Jedi order. So, while Luke in The Mandalorian might seem crazy, for the story they were telling with Grogu – a survivor of the Jedi Purge – it made sense for Luke to be the one who answered Grogu’s call for help earlier in the season.

We will have to wait and see if Luke and Grogu show up in season three. One imagines Lucasfilm won’t want to keep the child often known as Baby Yoda away from our screens for long.

The Mandalorian season two sees the returning Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Bill Burr (Mayfield), and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) joined by the likes of Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Rosario Dawson (Daredevil), and WWE Superstar Sasha Banks.
