Joseph Gordon-Levitt says there were never any plans to follow up on The Dark Knight Rises ending

April 30, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Years later and the tease at the end of The Dark Knight Rises is still on fan’s minds. If you don’t remember, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake was revealed to be called Robin, but there was also a hint of him becoming the successor to Batman by finding the Batcave.

During a recent Ask Me Anything on Reddit, Joseph Gordon-Levitt took time away from promoting his platform HITRECORD to answer a fan’s question when asked: “So that Robin ending… Were there any plans to do anything with that?”

“As far as I know, that was always going to be the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies,” said Gordon-Levitt. “It actually makes a really good ending to his trilogy. The theme recurs throughout that Batman is more than a man; it’s a symbol; it makes sense to end the story with a person other than Bruce Wayne donning the mask.”

When asked about working with director Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises, Gordon-Levitt had only positive things to say about the experience. “Getting to work for Chris taught me an enormous amount, not just about art and cinema but about leadership and basically being a grownup. He strikes an incredible balance between being profoundly dedicated and immersed in the pure art of it, while also being laser-focused on a million little practicalities.”

So, like many of us expected, the tease at the end of The Dark Knight Rises was just that… a tease. Are you disappointed, or do you agree with Gordon-Levitt that it makes for a better ending to the overall story?
