Josh Trank pitched a “hard-R Venom” movie that the producer hated

May 6, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Josh Trank, director of Chronicle and Fantastic Four, pitched an R-rated Venom movie that the producer apparently hated.

Tom Hardy’s successful Venom movie has added another interesting component to Sony’s shared Spidey universe and fans are looking forward to the upcoming sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

However, Josh Trank, the director of Chronicle, once pitched an R-rated Venom movie that never got off the ground due to the producer hating the idea.

Speaking to Polygon to promote the release of his new movie Capone, starring Venom actor Hardy, Trank revealed that producer Matt Tolmach hated his concept of a “hard-R Venom in the vein of The Mask” and that he had no choice but to walk away:

“I didn’t like how Matt Tolmach was coming at me in that situation, because it felt very kind of authoritative. Well, if you don’t like what I’m doing, and you’re telling me that I have to do something along the lines of what you want, and you’re going to tell it to me in this way — sorry, but I have other things I can be doing.”

It certainly sounds like an interesting concept and something many fans would love to see. Fingers crossed that next year’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be compelling enough to stop us thinking about what might have been.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set for release on June 25th 2021 and sees Andy Serkis (Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle) directing returning cast members Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock/Venom), Michelle Williams (Anne Weying) and Woody Harrelson (Cletus Kasady/Carnage) alongside new additions Naomie Harris (No Time To Die) and Stephen Graham (The Irishman).
