Jumanji: The Next Level reportedly on course for $70 million opening

October 24, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having held its own against Star Wars: The Last Jedi back in 2017, it seems that Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle follow-up could be set to repeat that feat this December when it goes up against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

According to long range tracking estimates from Box Office Pro, Jumanji: The Next Level is eyeing a $70 million domestic opening weekend, which would almost double that of Welcome to the Jungle and its $36 million bow.

The Next Level arrives a week before The Rise of Skywalker in the U.S., opening alongside Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell and the latest Black Christmas remake.

Welcome to the Jungle went on to earn a stellar $962 million worldwide, showing impressive legs, and given a strong start (and decent reviews), The Next Level may well go on to become Sony’s second billion-dollar grossing release of 2019 after Spider-Man: Far From Home.

‘In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.’

Jumanji: The Next Level is being directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and will see the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas alongside newcomers Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon).
