Kevin Feige confirms The Fantastic Four is 1960s-set, teases alternate universe

June 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno

It’s rare to get such candid and forward commennts about an MCU project from Kevin Feige, but his joy over the upcoming Fanastic Four film can’t be contained.

While appearing on the first episode of a new Marvel Entertainment-produced podcast, the head of Marvel Studios finally spilled some tea about what’s to come for Marvel’s First Family. For one, we got a production start date.

“We start shooting at the end of July,” revealed Feige on The Official Marvel Podcast. “The day after Comic-Con [International: San Diego] is the first day of filming on Fantastic Four.”

Later, during the inaugural episode, fans received the official confirmation of the period setting as the Marvel chief finally revealed something about his mysterious project when asked about the fan speculation about it being a 1960s-set film.

“Yes, yes, very much so. It is a period,” confirmed Feige. “There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or that existed in the ’60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I’ll say.”

Overall, you can tell the producer is very optimistic about the future of these characters in Marvel: “I’m extremely excited by it because I think those characters are mainstays, are legendary pillars of the Marvel Universe that we’ve never gotten to play with or explore in a significant way outside of Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and a few fun teases before, in the way that we’re doing it in that film. So I’m extremely excited for that.”

The Fantastic Four is being directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and will star Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, Ralph Ineson as Galactus, and Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich in as yet-unrevealed roles.

The Fantastic Four will be released on July 25th, 2025.
