Laura Benanti cast as Supergirl’s birth mother in CBS series

February 20, 2015 by James Garcia

There are two famous Kryptonian parents known for sending their child away from their home planet just before its destruction: Lara Lor-Van and Jor-El, who give birth to Superman. What many may not know is that there are two other Kryptonians who did the same thing for their child, Kara, who would grow up to become Supergirl. Their names are Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, and at least one of them will show up in the upcoming Supergirl series on CBS.

According to Deadline, Nashville and Nurse Jackie actress Laura Benanti has been cast as Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara, who’s being played by Glee alum Melissa Benoist. She won’t just show up to ship Kara away from Krypton, either; she’ll reportedly have a “key recurring role” in the show, and her “wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.”

Could the CBS series use Alura Zor-El the same way that Smallville and the Superman films used Clark’s father, Jor-El? That is, as a sort of ethereal guide and teacher (by way of advanced alien tech) to help the character learn about and accept their heritage and destiny? It’s certainly possible.

Created by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family), Supergirl has a series commitment at CBS. It also stars Mehcad Brooks (True Blood, Necessary Roughness) as Jimmy Olsen.
