Leonardo DiCaprio to play an ageing Western TV star in Quentin Tarantino’s new film

January 19, 2018 by Jordan Jones

While there is still a ton of mystery surrounding Quentin Tarantino’s latest film — under the working title #9 (number 9… number 9… number 9…?) — details have been slowly creeping out of the woodwork.

What we know: We know the movie will take place in the 1960’s, will involve Sharon Tate to some degree, and will have the Manson murders as a backdrop to the main plot. The main plot allegedly involved two actors trying to break into Hollywood. Actors in talks for parts include Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise, while Leonardo DiCaprio is now a lock to star.

So, who will DiCaprio play? Well, we don’t have a name, but we reportedly now have a character description. Deadline’s Mike Fleming gives a fairly detailed description of the character that DiCaprio will portray in the untitled film:

“What he plays, more specifically, is an actor who had his own Western show, Bounty Law, that ran on the air from 1958 to 1963. His attempt to transition to movies didn’t work out and in 1969 — the film is set at the height of hippy Hollywood movement– he’s guesting on other people’s shows while contemplating going to Italy which has become a hotbed for low-budget Westerns.”

This certainly sounds like an interesting character, and it gives Tarantino a chance to play around with some Western imagery; something that the director is obviously fond of doing. Heading to Italy would also get us into the realm of “spaghetti westerns”, which Tarantino would probably have a blast exploring. All in all, this is shaping up to be a really cool film. Stay tuned!

The film, which is going by the working title of #9, is set for release on August 9th 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Tate murders on August 9th 1969.
