Live-action Scooby-Doo series coming to Netflix from Greg Berlanti

April 30, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Are we seeing the residents of Coolsville get a Riverdale-like makeover? A new Greg Berlanti-helmed Scooby-Doo series could mean teen angst is heading to Mystery Incorporated.

This week, news broke that Greg Berlanti will executive produce a live-action update, which Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will write. Per the reports, the project has a “script-to-series commitment at Netflix,” meaning we’ll see a straight-to-series order if the script is well received.

Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter will executive produce alongside Leigh London Redman. Berlanti Productions’ Jonathan Gabay and Midnight Radio’s Adrienne Erickson will be credited as co-executive producers.

For those who don’t know, Greg Berlanti is the name behind some of the biggest teen dramas, including Dawson’s Creek, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Berlanti is also credited for bringing to life The CW’s Arrowverse, Titans, and Doom Patrol.

Scooby-Doo has a long history in pop culture. It was created in 1969 by writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. The cartoon aired in syndication on CBS and ABC until it was canceled in 1986. From there, we saw countless spin-offs and adaptations, including two very popular live-action films.

In 2002, the franchise changed forever with the film that starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, which grossed $275 million worldwide and a sequel.

The last major project related to Scooby-Doo was an animated feature, Scoob!, released during the pandemic. If this series comes to be on Netflix, Greg Berlanti’s Scooby-Doo will become the first live-action series in the franchise.
