Lost Doctor Who serial The Power of the Daleks to receive animated remake

September 7, 2016 by Gary Collinson

The BBC has announced that is has commissioned an animated remake of the “lost” Doctor Who serial  ‘The Power of the Daleks’, which featured the regeneration of William Hartnell’s First Doctor into Patrick Troughton’s Second, with the Time Lord then battling his arch-enemies across a six episode serial.

The entire serial had been lost, with the master tapes erased in the 1960s, and the remaining prints destroyed in 1974. News of the animated remake first emerged last month when a teaser was uploaded to social media and quickly removed, but now the BBC has officially confirme dthat it will be using surviving audio recordings, photographs and clips in order to reproduce the story.

“The Power of the Daleks animation is the most ambitious Doctor Who archive restoration ever attempted and we’re all very honoured to be a part of such a an exciting project,” said Charles Norton, who will be directing the project. “Intelligent, suspenseful and magnificently staged, Power of the Daleks is one of the great lost classics of 1960s television and a superb example of the black and white era at its finest.”

“Charles and his team are remarkably talented and passionate about Doctor Who and we are thrilled that fans will soon be able to enjoy this rather sinister but wonderful, classic story,” added BBC Worldwide executive producer Paul Hembury.

A special screening of ‘The Power of the Daleks’ will take place at the BFI Southbank on Saturday, November 5th, and it will also hit the BBC Store that same day. A DVD release is set for Monday, November 21st.
