MacGruber TV series in the works

February 11, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having failed to get a sequel to the cult 2010 action comedy off the ground, it now looks as through director Jorma Taccone and star Will Forte are turning their attention to the small screen, with Taccone revealing to The Daily Beast (via Collider) that plans are afoot for a MacGruber TV series.

“We just spent the last two days pitching it as a series,” said Taccone. “Eight-to-ten episodes. I’m really hoping that when you print this there’s an announcement that it’s actually happening, because I know nothing right now. This is the first time I’ve mentioned it, so this may be a tragic interview.”

Taccone went on to state that the cast of the movie, including Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer, are open to returning should they manage to secure a deal for the series:

“It’s everyone. Val was blown up pretty badly, he’ll have half a head. Everyone is so down. What’s nice is that, when you make something that had the heartbreak of not doing so well financially… I would feel terrible if the people involved were embarrassed about it, but Ryan loves that shit, Kristen loves that shit, all the people involved are so psyched.”

Originally a Saturday Night Live parody of the TV series MacGyver, the MacGruber movie was released back in 2010 and quickly became a cult favourite, although it tanked at the box office with just $9.3 million from its theatrical release.
