Mark Hamill clarifies his comments about “fundamentally disagreeing” with Rian Johnson over Star Wars: The Last Jedi

June 15, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in April, Mark Hamill caused a bit of a stir when speaking about his upcoming role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, stating that: “I said to [director Rian Johnson], I think I fundamentally disagree with everything you’ve decided for me. Now having said that, I have to accept it, get my mind around it and do my best to realize your vision.”

As you’d expect, Hamill’s comments proved a tad controversial, and seemed to indicate that he wasn’t pleased about the way Luke is portrayed in the new movie. However, the actor has now clarified his remarks during an interview with Variety at the Tony Awards, revealing that he didn’t quite manage to get his intended point across.

“I got into trouble because… I was quoted as saying to Rian that I fundamentally disagree with everything you decided about Luke, and it was inartfully phrased. What I was, was surprised at how he saw Luke. And it took me a while to get around to his way of thinking, but once I was there it was a thrilling experience. I hope it will be for the audience too. Rian Johnson is an amazing filmmaker. And if you look at Brick, or Brothers Bloom, or Looper, each film is different from the last one and they’re so inventive. And I think people will be really pleased and surprised, I know I was.”
