Martin Scorsese’s next will be an 80 minute film about Jesus

January 8, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Following the lengthily shoot and even greater run-time of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, the legendary director has decided that he’s going to follow it up with an 80 minute film about Jesus Christ.

Last year, while reflecting on his illustrious career, Martin Scorsese told Vanity Fair “I want to tell stories, and there’s no more time”, so he has reacted by deciding to cram in his next film as soon as this year, and according to The Los Angeles Times it’s set to “run around 80 minutes”.

Scorsese has written the script alongside critic and filmmaker Kent Jones, and he plans to shoot it later this year.

Based on the 1973 novel “A Life of Jesus”, written by Shūsaku Endō, the author responsible for the 1966 novel Silence, which Scorsese turned into the Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver-led epic in 2016,

While Scorsese is still figuring the film out, it is reportedly set in the present day, with Marty stating that he wants to “find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion.”

This will be the second time Scorsese has turned to The Good Book for inspiration following 1988’s The Last Temptation of Christ, and much like that parable he has already revealed that he’ll give himself a role in the new movie.
